Who should read this articles: HubSpot-savvy marketers. Beginners who understand the basics of how to update a website in HubSpot CMS. Web developers who want to understand how HubSpot works.
HubSpot is a very robust CMS, and one of its most magical features is HubSpot Templates.
Templates are essentially the blueprints of your website. Only unlike blueprints for a building, they are easy to change and edit. Templates make every page of your website look uniform, like a guideline that pages automatically follow. It ensures that nothing is left out of place.
The fundamental concept of templates is not new. When Web 2.0 started way back in 2007, the idea was to make websites full of rich content that were easy for users to edit. A lot of different CMS systems such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal leverage the notion of templates.
Like other CMS systems, HubSpot CMS also has templates. HubSpot templates not only determine how your website looks and functions, but are also easy to maintain and edit over time. Here are the basic components or building blocks of HubSpot templates:
Modules
Every web [user interface] element is a module in HubSpot CMS, including images, content, forms, and videos. This means all your web elements are reusable units. It’s like a library of parts that you can pull from at any time. You can build custom modules or use the default ones that HubSpot offers.
CSS Style Sheets
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are used to apply a style to web pages. You can attach Style Sheets to HubSpot templates that change the style of the modules in the template. This allows you a deeper level of customization.
JavaScript Files
HubSpot templates use JavaScript, a programming language, to add interactivity to websites. With JavaScript, you can dynamically add and remove web elements, pull data, and integrate third-party services like Google Analytics. This makes your website much more engaging to visitors.
Establish Design Guidelines Templates establish consistent design across your entire website. There is a reason why developers at HubSpot believe that templates make HubSpot website development easier and faster. Templates promote usability and provide the ability to edit the structure and design in a centralized manner.
Global Modules Every website has repeated sections such as header menus, footers, etc. HubSpot templates make it easy to develop and manage these reusable modules without having to do things multiple times. No one has time for that.
Make Website Updates Easier As your business changes and grows, you’ll need an easy way to add to your website, offer limited-time deals, and post important updates like new products. HubSpot templates make it easy to update design and content even without developer experience.
Embedding Media and Social Media Embedded content is part of what makes a website pop. HubSpot templates make it easy to embed rich content such as videos and images from third parties. It’s also easy to embed relevant social media posts. This makes your website more dynamic and makes people want to spend more time learning about you and your business.
Installing Third-Party Scripts A good website works with third parties, not against them. HubSpot templates make it easy to install third-party scripts such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, and more. This means you get more functionality and insights into how your website is performing. All at the touch of a button.
Building Reusable Library You shouldn’t have to create templates more than once. With the HubSpot design tools, a library of templates can be created and used on website pages in the future. This saves you a lot of time and many headaches down the line.
There are two ways to build HubSpot templates: HubSpot Design Manager or code files. For several years, HubSpot was encouraging developers to use HubSpot Design Manager. But with the launch of HubSpot local development tools, HubSpot now encourages developers to use code files.
